A leading Carbon Neutral Waste Management company has picked up a prestigious environmental award for its work with Mill Gate Shopping Centre, Bury.
Both Mill Gate Shopping Centre and B&M Waste Services received a Green Apple Environment Award at a glittering presentation ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on Friday.
The awards, now in their 22nd year, reward and promote environmental best practice in the UK and elsewhere in the world.
B&M won its Green Apple for a major waste management initiative it has implemented at Mill Gate Shopping Centre, where diversion of waste from landfill has now hit the very impressive level of 97%.
In 2015/16, Mill Gate saved 130,000kg of carbon through increased recycling with B&M Waste, which is the equivalent of 111 trees or 39,330 car miles.
Paul Newton, of B&M Waste Services, said: “We are delighted to have won a prestigious Green Apple award which recognises the fantastic results we have been able to achieve in a relatively short period of time.
“We praise Mill Gate Shopping Centre staff, tenants and customers for their buying in to the new recycling solutions we have implemented.
Marie Gribben, Mill Gate Shopping Centre said: “The Green Apple award is recognition of the team effort involving Mill Gate, B&M Waste Services and all the management and tenants at the shopping centre. Everyone is rightly proud of the contribution they have made to protecting the environment and improving sustainability.”
The Green Apple Awards, run by the Green Organisation, was presented on November 11, and are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
B&M Waste and Mill Gate Shopping Centre are continuing to look at new innovative ways of further improving the environmental performance of the site, through new techniques and technologies.
