The need
B&M Waste was given just 48 hours to mobilise this COVID-19 testing centre in Charnwood, Loughborough. Opening in November 2020, the 24-hour laboratory needed to be ready to carry out 20 000 tests per day, rising to 50 000 tests per day by January 2021.
B&M Waste needed to provide EMCOR UK with a simple and effective solution for the removal of different waste streams, including the clinical waste from the tests, general waste, cardboard and mixed recycling from the laboratories.
The solution
B&M undertook an in-depth site audit to ensure they put forward a solution that was tailored to the requirements of a 24-hour COVID-19 testing centre.
B&M Waste’s solution comprised providing B&M branded 10yard FELs for the general and cardboard waste and 1100L bins for the mixed recycling from the labs. For the clinical waste, 770L bins were placed on site and tags given for the bins to be able to easily differentiate between waste for incineration and alternative treatment. The number of bins increased as the volume of testing increased over time and daily bin collections and exchanges were scheduled and effected.
Signage was also provided for each of the different waste streams on the site so that all employees were aware of what type of waste went into each of the different containers.
